| Name: | Koki Kariya |
|---|
|
age unknown, appears 20 male / straight Kariya is tall and lanky, with angular features and a permanent casual slouch. His hair is bright orange and about half-combed; it's as if he did it just enough to get it out of his face, then pinned it back and left the rest to its own devices. He wears rectangular-frame glasses, and carries around a lollipop at all times. His style's pretty conservative for Shibuya; a white tank top under a sleeveless black hoodie with a ribcage design on it, skinny brown jeans with a designer wallet chain on the one side, and white loafers. The only really unusual thing about his appearance are his black, stylized skeletal wings, marking his status as a Reaper. |

On the surface, Kariya seems like a slacker, but look deeper and you will find.... a slacker. He likes his job, sure, but ask him to clock out early and he'll be happy to do so. He rarely puts much effort into anything, sliding by on natural ability instead. When he does have to work, he prefers to make a game out of it if possible (the usual stakes being who buys lunch); and while he does actually kind of like it when he gets to personally participate in a fight, it's not something he goes out of his way for.
Frequently flippant and occasionally morbid, he's not always easy to get used to. He does, after all, wipe the recently dead out of existence for a living, and he has a real knack for getting under people's skin when he wants to. Plus, partly because he gets a kick out of being mysterious, he plays pretty close to the vest. Still, despite being a self-confessed villain, he's actually not that bad a guy, especially if you catch him off duty. He's honest, fairly up-front, and keeps his promises, no strings attached. When he wins, he doesn't gloat, and when he loses, he accepts it graciously. He loves Shibuya, and the diverse assortment of people making it the unique place it is. So, he may not be an overtly social creature, but people do have a way of growing on him. If he likes you enough, he might even do you a favor now and then. |
Kariya fights using psychs, psychic abilities derived from pins, and it's been mentioned more than once that his skill with them puts even his superiors to shame (when he bothers). He prefers ranged attacks over up close and personal, and his choice of psychs reflects that:
In combat, he's literally inhumanly fast, especially if he's really trying, and the fact that he can fly just enhances it. The flight's fairly low-altitude and short-range, though. He also has the ability to "scan" (i.e., read people's minds within a certain radius, and detect Noise if any is present), which, as a Reaper, he's able to do without a pin. With keypins, he's able to set up invisible walls of strengths varying from Levels 1 to 4; these can be cleared by the appropriate keypin (which he has) or by enough brute force to simply tear through them (a level 1 wall isn't terribly difficult, but with a level 4 wall it's a real feat). Naturally, something like, say, a magical key that can open any lock, would work, too. He can hide his wings at will and look like a normal human, but this also leaves him unable to use any of his other abilities. Since Paixao has no distinction between Underground and Realground zones, he's fully visible whether or not he hides them, so chances are he won't bother unless he has to. Additionally, he's likely able to transform himself into some kind of Boss Noise (since other Reapers at his rank can), but he's never done so in canon. |
|
Like all Reapers of his rank, Kariya's speed and power are intrinsically tied to his wings. It's kind of unclear how you would go about removing or sealing them, but if you managed it, he'd be forced into the Realground and unable to use any abilities.
His offensive psychs are all derived from pins; if they're stolen, he can't use them, and if damaged or broken they become worthless. He may have backups, but not replacements, and it would take time (and a button press) to make more. It's kind of redundant by this point to say that his tendency to procrastinate is a weakness, but it's true. He tends to show up late and clock out early, whether or not he still has work to do, which results in missed quotas and having to work extra hard later on to make up for them. Also, while he can get around okay without them, he has a very hard time reading without his glasses. |

(Almost nothing is revealed in his canon, so this is almost all speculation.)
Kariya used to be human, that much is certain. How he died is a mystery, since he never talks about it, but one way or another, he wound up as a Player in Shibuya's Reapers' Game. If he won the seven-day Game, he'd be brought back to life. He turned out to be a natural at it, and probably could have won if he'd really tried, but as he only put out the minimum effort to keep himself in the running, he didn't wind up among those to be resurrected. At that point his options were to play again, become a Reaper himself, or be erased; he chose the second. Of course, he was every bit as lazy as a Reaper as he'd been as a Player. Though he did enough work to keep his job, he was still just getting by on pure talent, without putting any real effort into it. That was before Uzuki Yashiro came along. He met her about two years ago, when she was a Player. Through no fault of his own, he kept running into her throughout her week, and per his job, attempted to erase her and her partner with summoned Noise on several occasions. As she began to grow on him, though, he started letting her off the hook, but to his surprise this quickly earned him a hissy fit from Uzuki herself. Intrigued now, he spent their next couple of encounters seriously trying to erase them, but they still managed to silence all the Noise he threw at them. When he left, it was with very little doubt they'd beat the Game that round. Shortly after the week ended, though, he was half surprised to see Uzuki come back, and this time as a fellow Reaper. She's been hanging out with and forcing him to get his work done ever since, and perhaps because of this, he was recently offered a promotion to Officer, but he turned it down to keep working in the streets. He was pulled to Paixao at the beginning of what, as far as he knew, would've been just another work week... |
